What are the benefits of learning French? Is it worth compared to English or Spanish?

ILT learning french

(Short answer: YES. Long answer: read this blog 😄)

There are some questions I get all the time as a French language teacher: “Why should I learn French?” “Is French even useful?” “Should I learn Spanish instead?” “English toh already aati hai… toh French kyun?”

So here’s the honest truth, spoken as someone who turned French into a career, a business, a livelihood, and a whole identity.

Let’s break it down in a fun way with three angles: 👉 Professional 👉 Psychological 👉 Social …and of course, a little bit of my story woven in.

1️⃣ Professional Benefits: The Life-Changing Part

French

French is not just “France ki language.” It is the official language of 29 countries, spoken by over 300 million people worldwide, and it is the second most learned foreign language after English.

So yes, French = opportunities.

From my 8+ years of experience, here’s something nobody tells you: ANY type of student can benefit professionally. Students, working professionals, career-switchers, homemakers, freelancers. The only real requirement is: 👉 reach B1 level or higher.

That’s when the magic begins.

💼 Careers my students have entered after French:

  • Schools (French teacher)

  • Universities (lecturer)

  • Interpretation and translation

  • Corporate roles in MNCs

  • Customer support roles for French markets

  • Content moderation for French-speaking clients

  • Tourism, hospitality, international sales

  • Work or internships in francophone countries

💰 Salary Jump?

Quantifying it is difficult, but a minimum 20% jump is very normal. Some students have even doubled their income simply because “French speaker needed” gives them an edge.

🌍 Global Mobility

ILT students are living and thriving in:

  • France

  • Canada

  • Switzerland

  • Morocco

  • Belgium …all because French + their existing skill = an unbeatable combination.

French truly opens doors that English alone cannot.

2️⃣ Psychological Benefits: The Brain Glow-Up (Yes, that’s a thing)

brain

Nobody talks about the internal changes that come with learning a new language.

For me personally, learning French:

  • improved my memory

  • boosted creativity

  • made me more observant

  • increased daily productivity

  • kept my brain active and excited

I still get a spark of joy every time I see ANY French word anywhere. Labels on chocolate, shampoo bottles, books, tiny descriptions behind products. I read everything.

Learning French was like adding a new operating system to my brain. Suddenly I became more curious, more alive, more engaged.

And yes, it helped academically too. My strong foundation in French helped me get into a top college for my Master’s in French, which shaped my entire career.

3️⃣ Social and Travel Benefits: The “Wow, you speak French?” Effect

connections

This is honestly my favourite part.

When I travelled to France, I didn’t feel like a tourist. I felt like a local.

A small story:

Once, in a BlaBlaCar, the driver casually asked me: “Tes parents sont français?” (“Are your parents French?”)

Why? Because he couldn’t believe a foreigner could speak French so naturally.

That moment will stay with me forever.

The connections you make in a foreign language feel different. More sincere, more authentic, more human.

I’ve made friends in France whom I’m still in touch with today. And now I can also connect with millions of francophone internet users. YouTube, Reels, memes, podcasts. Everything becomes a new world to explore.

4️⃣ French vs English vs Spanish: The Big Question

learning

Should you learn French instead of English or Spanish?

Here’s the truth:

English:

Great. Essential. But English speakers connect with the same global community everyone else already connects with.

Spanish:

Amazing too, but Spanish is mainly strong in South America and Spain.

French:

French gives access to 29 countries across 5 continents. So the career, travel and global exposure simply hits differently.

For those who ask “English toh already aati hai… why French?”

My answer is simple: Exactly. English hi aati hai. Which means you are already connected to the Anglophone world.

Now imagine unlocking a second global community. More people. More stories. More jobs. More experiences. More creativity. More life.

Why limit yourself to one world when you can live in two?

Final Thoughts: Is it Worth Learning French?

Absolutely. Undoubtedly. A thousand times YES.

Learning French changed my life professionally, socially, emotionally and creatively. And it can do the same for you.
